TROUBLESHOOT: Safedisc problems: CD drives that may not work
Installing and Running added on 08/07/2004

We use SafeDisc copy protection for most of our products. Unfortunately various versions of this may have issues with some hardware. The following is what we know could be troublesome cd- or dvd-drives (it depends a bit on what product and the version of that product you are running).

Pan International CyberDrive 240

Once a bad sector is read, all following reads are returned as bad and the game disc will not play correctly.

ASUS CD-S400

On Windows 9X, when the DMA option is selected for this CD Drive, the drive freezes during CD initialization. To allow the game to play successfully from this drive, disable the DMA option for the drive and reboot the system. Consult your operating system help files for instructions on turning off the DMA setting.

Matshita CR-581-B

On Windows NT 4, initialization may fail and the game may not play. Windows 9x, Windows 2000 and Windows XP work correctly.

Philips CDD2000

The game is incompatible with this drive.

LG GDR-8161B

The game is incompatible with this DVD drive. This drive is apparently also known as model HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B.

Toshiba HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR-8081N (Sep 2002 Laptop drive)

The game is incompatible with this DVD drive.

LG HL-DT-STDVDRAM GMA-4020B Apr 2003 IDE (internal drive)

The game has known intermittent problems with this drive. Most of the time it does work but on occasion the game will fail to start.

AOPEN COM5232/AAH PRO

This drive can have problems with FMs copy protection. It is uncertain if this is limitd to some systems or of it is true for all systems. AOpens eForum has a thread the describes the problem. When using this drive it may cause the game or the entire system to crash. There are firmware updates for this drive (see the AOpen download pages) but they appear to have no effect.

Acer CD-624a

The drive fails when used with real-mode drivers. To fix this, install protected-mode drivers.

Memorex CD-RW2224

The drive is incompatible with the current version of SafeDisc.

Plextor CD-ROM PX-32TS (SCSI)

Certain versions of this CD-ROM drive may be incompatible with SafeDisc.

Sanyo CRD-256P

The drive enters a not ready state after several attempts to start the game. This drive is incompatible with the current version of SafeDisc.

Sony CDU77E

Early 1.0 firmware versions of this drive fail if configured as a slave on the IDE bus. The drive will work if reconfigured as a master.

Yamaha 2216E, 4416SX, and CDR6416S-VK

These drives are incompatible with the current version of SafeDisc.

TROUBLESHOOT: Installer: "ikernel.exe"
Installing and Running added on 06/11/2004

When I try and install the game I get an error along the lines of

“The install Shield engine "ikernel.exe" could not be launched -Error loading type library /dll”

TROUBLESHOOT: Installer trying to install a different program
Installing and Running added on 06/11/2004

If it seems that the installer or setup is trying to install a different program to what you are actually trying to install, this is most likely because it's picking up exisitng files from your temporary folder. On Windows 9x/ME this will be C:\Windows\Temp, while on Windows 2000/XP or above it's in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp\.

You can either clean this folder manually by deleting its contents, or do this by:

Once it's finished, try to install the game again.

TROUBLESHOOT: Game not starting (FM05 Font Issue)
Installing and Running added on 06/11/2004

Several people have had issues with the demo not starting at all.   It is to do with people who had fonts with modification dates of 1800 and really old dates like that. Some people have deleted (or moved) these old fonts and have found that the problem is fixed and that they can play the game.

The fonts are in the c:\windows\fonts folder:

You can quite easily change the dates of the file:

- Right click on the file and then open the properties for the file

- Open the rightmost tab

- Fill inn something in the title field (or wherever)

- Click ok

With the new date things appear to work fine for a bunch of people.

Your demo should now start!

This issue is fixed in the first patch!

TROUBLESHOOT: Installer "Unspecified Error"
Installing and Running added on 06/11/2004

You may need administrator rights to install the game; the solution to this problem is switch to an account that does have administrator right (such as the actual administrator) and try to install the game.

TROUBLESHOOT: Installer "Error 1305: Error reading from [filename]. Verify that the file exists and you can access it."
Installing and Running added on 06/11/2004

1. Dirty or scratched disk

Please check the disk for scratches, fingerprints, marks or anything that could cause to disk to fail reading properly. Sometimes it doesn't take much before a cd- or dvd- drive has problems reading a disk. Try cleaning the disk with a soft cotton cloth.

2. Try the disk in another drive

Test the disk in another drive if possible, such as another drive in your computer, your family's computer or a friend's computer. If the disk does work in another drive, the problem is the drive itself, not the disk.

3. Renaming InstallShield folder

If you scratches or dirt on the disk, try to rename the "InstallShield" folder in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\" to "InstallShieldOld". Try to install the game.

4. Additional troubleshootings steps

If the above does not work, try the following CD Troubleshooting steps:

Windows 98/ME

Try installing the latest version of DCOM for your operating system. Here are the URL's to download the version for your operating system;

Windows 98: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=08b1ac1b-7a11-43e8-b59d-0867f9bdda66&displaylang=en

If that does not help, please follow the steps below to ensure a more compatible CD-ROM setting

Try installing the game again.

If those settings are already correct, try setting the Supplemental cache size for your cdrom drive to "Small" and the Optimize access pattern settings to "No Read Ahead"  (NOTE: if these changes do not help get the game running I would recommend that you restore the original settings after trying this)

Also, if you have any virus protection programs like Norton or McAfee, temporarily disable them by right clicking on the icon in your system tray in the lower right corner of the desktop and selecting "Disable" or "Exit". Also be sure to end all background programs before attempting installation. Do this by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Delete simultaneously and end tasking all applications except for Explorer and systray

If the game still won't start up, try rebooting your computer, then before you do anything, make sure to end all background tasks then try starting up the game.

Checking Sync Data Transfer

If you are still receiving the same error message, then try checking Sync data Transfer for your CDrom Drive:

Disabling DMA

You can also try disabling DMA for your cdrom drive if you have that option.

Windows 2000/XP or above

First, make sure that you are logged in as the Administrator (for Windows XP Professional) or Owner (for Windows XP Home). This will usually be the first account that was created once Windows XP was fully installed. If you are not certain, contact the manufacturer of your PC for assistance in finding your Administrator/Owner account.

If that fails to help resolve the issue, try downloading the SafeDisk update from the following website; http://www.macrovision.com/products/safedisc/downloads.shtml

4. Try to copy the contents of the CD to your hard drive (All windows versions)

If the previous steps did not work, and you have circa 6GB of hard drive space available, you can try copying the disk files to your hard drive and installing without the CDs.  Make sure to follow the steps below exactly as they read, or else the install may not work.

To save disk space, you can delete the "FM2005" folder after the installation has completed.

If you cannot copy the cd contents to your hard drive or get the same error message when installing the game on another computer, then there is a possibility of the discs being defective. If the store that you purchased the game from will not allow you to exchange the game for another copy, we can help you obtain another new copy of the game, contact the Sega via contact information at the back of the game manual.

TROUBLESHOOT: Error "Cannot locate CD-ROM"
Installing and Running added on 06/11/2004

TROUBLESHOOT: Error "Please eject and re-insert the CD-ROM"
Installing and Running added on 06/11/2004

In some cases it seems some issues with the copy protection we use, SafeDisk, can cause you get the following error when you try to run the game: "lease eject and re-insert the CD-ROM, select OK and restart application"

First of all, check the cd is clean and is not damaged.  Second check the cd-drive works fine with other software and indeed audio cd’s.

Please refer to "Troubleshooting Safedisc problems" for potential solutions.

TROUBLESHOOT: 'Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application' (or similar)
Installing and Running added on 12/01/2005

We have an issue with some retailers who have unwittingly sold pirated copies of Football Manager 2005. We discovered this issue the fm2005.exe on the pirated CD's are not copy protected. The FM2005 patch is. Therefore it took releasing the patch and having people not be able to get it working to find out that there was a problem, which we originally thought was copy protection/emulation based. However, having now been able to compare the pirated CD's with normal ones, and having had the pirated CD's analysed, we now know that there are pirated CD's out there being sold not just to customers but also to retailers believing they are the real thing. They aren't, have not come from us, Sega, or any of our legitimate distributors.

If you think you are affected, then as we said we would suggest getting in touch with the retailer who sold the game to you, and asking for a refund or replacement, then buy one (if online) from amazon.co.uk, play.com, gameplay.com or any of the major retailers that we always recommend.

However, we would be very grateful if you can take photo's of the CD and packaging first, and then send those photo's to piracy@sigames.com as has been requested, along with the details of where you bought the game from (which many of you have done already).

As for the people who say that it was the best-pirated version they have ever seen, we can only agree. However, there are subtle differences - if you want to check whether your version is pirated, the only way to do so is to send a photo of the disc to the piracy email address, and someone will get back in touch with you and let you know (we know what we're looking for, but will not publicly reveal as we don't want the people pirating knowing the mistake they are making).

If you think you are affected, then as we said we would suggest getting in touch with the retailer who sold the game to you, and asking for a refund or replacement, then buy one (if online) from amazon.co.uk, play.com, gameplay.com or any of the major retailers that we always recommend.

If you have an further questions regarding this issue, please email bugs_NOSPAM@sigames.com removing the NOSPAM part.

TROUBLESHOOT: Error "CD/DVD emulation software has been detected"
Installing and Running added on 12/01/2005

Do you get the message "CD/DVD emulation software has been detected. Please disable all CD/DVD emulation software and re-start the game." - or something similar? It seems that the copy protection we employ have issues with certain emulation software (and possibly burning/writing software) installed and running.

Please turn off any emulation software that is running and try to run the game. That should do the trick, but if it doesn't work, try to uninstall the emulation software and try to run the game.

If you are unsure about how to turn off emulation settings, consult your emulation program help files.

Please refer to "Safedisc problems: Software that may cause problems" for a list of software that may cause this error to occur.

TROUBLESHOOT: FM05 crashes to desktop after the logos/splash screens
Installing and Running added on 12/01/2005

First please ensure you have the latest Football Manager 2005 patch installed.

Also please ensure debugger software is not installed in the system. If you do not have any debugger software installed but continue to experience this problem, please contact Sega or Sports Interacive (via the Support forum on the message board) for technical support.

TROUBLESHOOT: Incorrect game language after installing patch 5.0.3
Installing and Running added on 02/03/2005

After I have applied the 5.0.3 patch my game is in the wrong language, help!

Inside FM2005 what you want is the menu on the far right. (options in english).

You want the 7th option down on that menu is prefrences, its the one with a line under it. (as new user is the one under it, and that has a line above and below it)

If you are in the editor with this problem you want the menu on the right (editor in english I think), and prefrences is the middle option on that menu of 3 items.
